Dreamy Giddy Nite on 23rd Nov 2006

I will be going on air together with Lola the producer and Navsta the DJ at the Malaysian radio station, Traxx FM, on 23rd Nov (10.15pm - 1am). The focus on that day will be dream-pop, noise-pop, space rock, post-rock and may cross over to indie-pop and even goth that sound dreamy, buzzy and could cause giddiness and headache if you're not used to them. I am the one picking the songs, so please do not blame Navsta and Lola for the giddiness and headache.

The following is the link to listen to the radio show online. It's a 24 hours radio station, so you can always check it out.

http://www.traxxfm.net/

To those who are tuning in on the radio In Malaysia or Singapore, pls refer to the radio frequency at:

R.E.M.

· LP: Red Medicine
· Released in 1995 by their own label, Dischord Records
· This is a great Washington based positive punk band greatly admired by the independent
music scene. It is an anti-violence punk band.
· The band was playing in Malaysia about 10 years ago at Fire Discotheque. Those who
were there would never forget about the gig and the band. The gig started late as usual
liked any local independent gig. At one point, the crowd was pushing towards the stage.
The security/bouncers were a bit rowdy. The lead singer prevented the potential violence
imposed by the security/bouncers towards the audiences and the show went on smoothly.

Farting In A Car Full of People Isn’t Rude, It’s Screwed Up – The Fridays
· EP: My Blur Baby
· This song was written out of frustration and the band is not serious about this song

Mr. Biggles – The Fridays
· EP: My Blur Baby

Wondermilk – The Fridays
· EP: My Blur Baby
· This song was written with the influence of Couple. However, it sounds more similar to the
style of Lucy In The Loo. I imagined Hana singing this song while listening.

Mocha – The Fridays
· EP: My Blur Baby
· Personally, I think this is the best track. The lyric sounds like it contains some vulgar
words but in reality there’s no vulgar word. Blame it on the raw unpolished recording

Dance Floor – The Fridays
· EP: My Blur Baby
· Personally, this is the song I dislike. It has the influence of Al Stewart – Ashraff (the lead
singer) was probably digging his mom’s record collection for inspiration while writing this
song. It’s not really bad after listening to it several times but it is just a song that could not
instantly fit into my taste of music.

My Blur Baby – The Fridays
· EP: My Blur Baby
· This is another great track.

· Released in 2004 by Sanctuary Records
· Morningrise was originally released in 1991
· A UK band that came from Reading, Berkshire. The name Slowdive was reputed to be named after Siouxsie & The Banshees’ song, but actually it came from a dream that bassist, Nick Chaplin had. Two words appeared before his mind’s eye on that fateful night: “slowdive” and “slowburn”. The band could have been called Slowburn instead of Slowdive if Nick’s brain alighted on the latter. After Slowdive called it a day, band members Neil Halstead (vocals & guitars) & Rachel Goswell (vocals & guitars) moved on to form Mojave 3 and Christian Savill (guitar) headed off to form Monster Movie

The band calls it “Shut Up” but Siang calls it “Please Be Quiet”. Nao was formed in 2002 with 4 members. This is a very angry independent band with the influences from Mars Volta, System Of A Down, Primus, and King Crimson. The 3-songs demo came with a t-shirt.

8. Babble
LP: Join The Dots (from CD 2)
B-side of Lullaby/Fascination Street
A dog was brought into the control room and got it to put its paw on Lol Tolhurst's keyboard setup to make weird noises. The increasing unreliable Lol was lying in the corner drunk.

From Electra CD, Rubaiyat
A cover version of The Doors recorded for Electra Anniversary, even though cover version is not The Cure's cup of tea.

10. Hello I Love You
LP: Join The Dots (from CD 2)
Slight Return Mix from Electra CD, Rubaiyat
A cover version of The Doors that was beyond recognition. The song is barely 11 seconds. Is is the song that The Cure is going punk? Punk/New wave are the roots of The Cure anyway.

Various foreign artistes:
1. Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
LP: Substance (1977-1980 compilation)
Released in 1992
If I'm not mistaken, there is another song by INXS with the same title. Perhaps, it's a coincident that the lead singers of both of the bands committed suicide. Is it a curse to have a song titled "Love Will Tear Us Apart"? New Order is the continuationof Joy Division after the tragedy.

LP: Tails
Released in 1995 by Geffen Records
The band is famous for the chart topping hit, Stay, from the same album.

11. Vicious Cycle - Neural Vibe
LP: MantraReleased in 1998 by Snakeweed Records
No idea about this band at all. The names of the band members along with some statements in the album sleve makes me wonder whether they could be Malaysians or Singaporeans. My suspicious is based on: The band members thank Allah S.W.T. and there are names such as Ah Yang, Wendy Chua, Azura and even the word "My kampung boys" on the sleve.

Come Together Compilation

As a Malaysian independent music lover for over a decade, I decided to work on this crazy project at the beginning of 2005.

The idea is to get together various local independent bands to release a compilation album. At the same time, the bands can help one another to promote other bands' music to their friends and fans.

The project was filled with frustration for me. I almost gave up a few times but someone somehow will managed to convince me to carry on. During the project, a favourite band of mine pulled out, I lost the financial backup, lots of delay in obtaining the songs, lots of delay in the production, etc. No doubt I learned about management and music business in the process.

No commercial corporate is involved in the project. The project was done individually by a music lover for music lovers.

With the help of Fathul from Fathullistiwa Soundscapes (former member of Infectious Maggots and Spiral Kinetic Circus), he managed to get Love Never Dies to participate in the compilation and also managed to get his friend to do the remastering in a low cost budget.

The compilation managed to be released around Feb of 2006 around Chinese New Year. There are totally 19 songs from 19 bands.
